Impacting Practice through the Multi-paper Dissertation:

One Alternative to the Traditional Dissertation

In diverse colleges and universities, requirements for the traditional five-chapter dissertation may be met by preparing and/or publishing multiple papers on a related topic. In this session, two multi-paper dissertations focusing on the use of Improvement Science in school and district settings will be shared, along with university policies, IRB procedures, and the web sites developed for the dissertation presentation.

Deborah Peterson 

Dr. Deborah S. Peterson, Associate Professor Emerita at Portland State University, began preparinganti-racist, culturally responsive school leaders at PSU after 30 years experience as a K-12 educator. As a principal, she was known for dramatically increasing student outcomes among historically underserved communities while also expanding college access, increasing community engagement and including student voice. As associate professor, she guided doctoral students in studies of anti-racist, culturally responsive school leaders who empower students, faculty, and community through culturally-responsive or anti-racist leadership strategies and equity-focused Improvement Science methodology.

Cassandra Thonstad 

Cass Thonstad, Doctoral Candidate and Principal of Central Medford High School in Medford, Oregon has integrated Improvement Science since 2015, bringing a student-centered approach to decision-making, using her knowledge of teaching and learning. Her work, using Improvement Science, has improved collaboration among classified, licensed, and administrative staff, improving student outcomes and reducing disparities for typically under served students. Her multi-paper dissertation includes four book chapters and a recent submission to a practitioner journal, highlighting the lessons learned when using Improvement Science to lead change efforts in schools.

Ryan Carpenter 

Dr. Ryan Carpenter brings a fresh approach to tackling complex organizational challenges. Carpenter and his team in Estacada, Oregon, use an Evidence-Based Leadership framework to hardwire aligned behaviors and cultivate a culture of excellence. In 2021, Dr. Carpenter was recognized as one of the top 20 superintendents to watch in the United States. Ryan Carpenter is FIRED UP to help leaders improve systems and grow leaders using short cycles of improvement.
