The Work of Decolonizing Learning Protocols

Date: Wednesday, March 1, 2023

Time: 1:00 - 2:00 PM ET

The learning protocols have been adapted and used extensively for the purpose of leading scholarly practitioners to greater precision in their thinking. Without intending to, such protocols continue to perpetuate colonial structures that elevate Eurocentric and scientific epistemologies and devalue Indigenous epistemologies. Speaking protocols are a valuable tool for the community of practice, scholarly practitioners, and school district leadership staff; however, in order to fully meet today’s awareness of colonial power structures, this tool needs focused, transformative attention to Indigenous ways of knowing and being. Through the Spiral of Inquiry Approach, we will work on explicitly unpacking how to decolonize this tool together.

Gail Higginbottom

Gail Higginbottom is a Secwépemc scholarly practitioner, District Principal of Aboriginal Education, School District 8 Kootenay Lake, and EdD candidate with Western University’s Doctor of Education (EdD) program. Gail leads from an Indigenous lens, prioritizing Indigenous ways of knowing and being while supporting decolonial shifts in systems, practices, and thinking inside the school system; this entails leading from the heart, sharing stories, and honouring ancestors.  In her current district role, Gail focuses on amplifying Indigenous student voice and agency, leading anti-Indigenous racism, and explicitly leading from an equity stance.  Most importantly, Gail believes the journey of reconciliation is a shared journey and step by step, we are getting there together.
