Our Panelists

Dr. Gregoria Nova Cahill, California State University - East Bay

Dr. Nova Cahill is an academic counselor by trade and the Interim Dean, Academic Affairs – Mission and Transitional Studies at City College of San Francisco since July 1, 2019. She earned her undergraduate degree in Modern Languages and Linguistics in addition to a TESL certificate from Beloit College in Wisconsin in 2001 and a master’s degree in Counseling from CSUEB in 2004. July of 2019, she completed her Doctorate Degree of Education in Educational Leadership for Social Justice.

Dr. Cahill’s dissertation focused on highlighting the institutional barriers that Latinx students in community college confront when attempting to transfer to 4-year colleges and universities. Dr. Cahill is also the first in her Afro-Bolivian family to earn a doctoral degree. As the Interim Dean of the Mission Center, she hopes to continue the former Dean Jorge Bell’s legacy of making education accessible to students in the Bay Area & most importantly to the Hispanic/Latinx community. Her goal is to help students complete their educational goals of obtaining a certificate (CR or & NC), associate degree, transfer to the university, or take classes for personal enrichment.

Dr. Chuck Herring, University of Pittsburgh

The following tells you all you need to know about Dr. Chuck Herring:

• Parents love him because he’s undefeated in debates against children
• Football players play “FANTASY CHUCK HERRING”
• Oprah, Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz all ask him for advice
• One group of students said, “He is so amazing that he remained mute through our class and still received a standing ovation!”
• HE’S THE MOST INTERESTING EDUCATOR IN THE WORLD!

On a more serious note, Dr. Herring is unique in that he has a gift of making the complicated seem simple when people find the obvious has become invisible to them. A nationally acclaimed educator, author, entrepreneur, and speaker, Dr. Herring has a myriad of experiences from which to draw lessons that can be easily chunked into mentally digestible pieces that audience members can immediately utilize in their lives.

Currently, Dr. Herring is the Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion for the South Fayette Township School District outside of Pittsburgh, PA. Finally, as an empty-nester and Disney aficionado, he and his wife, Christine, spend most of their vacation time sailing the Seven Seas on Disney Cruises. But, because of that mean girl, first name Corona; last name Virus, they won’t be cruising for the next few years, at least.

Dr. Angelina Walker, University of Denver

Dr. Walker is the Principal for John H. Amesse Elementary School, part of the the Montbello Children’s Network, and she fights for liberatory education and success for all students through transformative, empowering, equitable, socially just, courageous lenses.

For the past seventeen years, Dr. Walker’s work has been predominantly with highly/ unjustly-impacted communities of color in the Denver Metro area. She is deeply passionate about history and social justice as a means to drive abolitionist acts, critical thinking, equity, and change in order to redefine and expand horizons for future leaders and learners. She holds a B.A. in Elementary Education, an M.A. in Linguistically Diverse Education and a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies with research in the areas of transformative educational leadership, sense making of racial identities and racially centered conversations in education.

Dr. Mayen Udoetuk, University of Houston

Dr. Mayen Udoetuk is the Director of Program and Partner Development at the UCSC Silicon Valley Extension. Currently, she is developing programs and industry partnerships intended to resolve highly complex training issues among professionals in Engineering and Technology, Business and Management, Bioscience, Education, and Design. Her objective is to assist these industries with closing skills gaps while reducing diversity, equity, and inclusion disparities.

In her previous roles, she developed, managed, and implemented various campus wide academic programs at the university level, in addition to providing innovative course design and instruction in chemistry and educational psychology as a chemist and university faculty member.

She holds a Bachelor’s in Chemistry from Norfolk State University, in addition to earning a Masters and Doctorate in Applied Educational Psychology from the University of Houston.

Our Moderator:

Dr. Jill Perry is the Executive Director of the Carnegie Project on the Educational Doctorate (CPED) and Associate Professor of Practice in the Education, Foundations, Organizations and Policy at the University of Pittsburgh. Her research focuses on professional doctorate preparation in education, organizational change in higher education, and faculty leadership roles. Dr. Perry is a graduate of the University of Maryland, where she received her PhD in International Education Policy. She holds an MA in Higher Education Administration and a BA in Spanish and International Studies from Boston College. She is a Fulbright Scholar (Germany) and a returned Peace Corps Volunteer (Paraguay).
