CPED Convening Theme 

HULIAU 

Turning point, time for change, to learn from the past, to change the present, and improve the future 

With a greeting of Aloha (reciprocal love, affection, kindness, grace, salutation, compassion, fondness for), our Hawaiian colleagues graciously invite member faculty, administrators, EdD students, and graduates to join them on the beautiful island of Oʻahu for the 2024 CPED convening.  

At this unique convening, we will be welcomed as allies and introduced to the vast changes that have been experienced by the native peoples of Hawai’i. This invitation comes with a request to join in a reciprocal relationship of Aloha between the people of Hawai’i and those from the continent and elsewhere. We are asked to read and learn about the past and present of Hawai’i before we travel. We are encouraged to bring a desire to listen and learn about how historical and institutional racism, colonization, and imperialism have disenfranchised Hawaiians from their native lives and lands. We are requested to lean into this uncomfortableness and when appropriate, stand strong with our colleagues. The hope is that through this convening we all learn what it means to be a social justice advocate and push to change the future with learning from the past.

To give back to our colleagues and the native lands of Hawai’i, we are asked to offer our own gifts of Huliau by embracing the past to make change in the present and by including ways in which we can all live sharing deep aloha. We do so by presenting Workshops and Learning Exchanges that seek to transform the present ways: 

CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS  

CPED convenings offer 2-4 pre-convening workshops which last 2-hours. For the 2024 convening, we invite proposals for 2-hour workshops that will be scheduled on the morning of October 14th at the in-person convening.  

If you are interested in offering a workshop, we invite you to consider how your topic will offer more time to learn and collaborate around the theme of Huliau. Presenters should be prepared to offer deeper interactive learning content that supports participants in the development of their institution’s scholarly practitioners as social justice advocates. 

Formats for proposals are listed below.  

CALL FOR LEARNING EXCHANGE PROPOSALS    

We invite CPED members—faculty, administrators, students, and other stakeholders–to submit convening learning exchange proposals that explore the above points. Those who participate in a CPED Improvement Group (CIG) may submit an exchange proposal that applies the convening theme to the topic of the CIG (see info below).     

Learning Exchanges are presented concurrently in breakout rooms. Exchanges can be facilitated by an individual or group and/or done collaboratively across departments or institutions. To promote the interactivity and engagement of participants, several types of learning exchanges are available (see formats below).  

Presenters may also choose to present their learning exchange: 

CIG Sponsored Small Group Exchanges open to CIG members:  

CIG Sponsored Exchanges will capture the spirit and focus of the CIG’s work and/or the convening’s theme as they relate to the CIG. CIG leaders develop the call for these exchanges and will be involved in reviewing proposals.  

Learning Exchange & Workshop Formats: 

CPED is committed to providing interactive ways for its members to engage with and learn from each other in concurrent breakout learning exchanges and large group sessions. Convening evaluations have informed us that members want to avoid “sit-and-get" sessions and instead to engage in active professional development that enables them to walk away with materials and/or ideas that they can use. To accomplish this, proposals are strongly encouraged to use the ideas below, which align to the convening theme, to develop highly engaging exchange sessions.     

HOW TO SUBMIT A WORKSHOP OR EXCHANGE PROPOSAL 

In no more than a 2-page Word document (approx. 1000 words), proposals should include the following information: 

Proposals are double blind, peer reviewed by CPED member faculty and CPED staff. Selections are made to provide an engaging, interactive learning experience for our diverse community. Space at the convening is limited, so we may not be able to accept all proposals. We encourage members to develop exchanges across institutions.
